The tool measures the background colour from the image border (a median, so a subject touching the edge does not throw it off), then floods inward from all four edges, removing every pixel close enough to that colour. Because it only removes what is CONNECTED to the edge, white eyes, teeth or a white shirt inside the character stay untouched. White, grey, coloured and dark backgrounds all work.
The tolerance is derived from the noise measured in that same image — AI exports are usually speckled with compression noise, and a fixed threshold leaves those specks behind. The subject's edge is softened across three pixel rings instead of hard-cut, so there is no bright halo on a dark background.
Background patches fully enclosed by strokes — the counters of O and D, lens holes — are NOT punched automatically, because nothing distinguishes them from a character's white eyes or white shirt: in flat outlined artwork the two are identical. Instead the tool outlines every such patch in yellow and you click the ones you want, or press “Punch all” — you see what would disappear before it does, and undo is always there.
For the best result
Generate images with a pure white background in the prompt (“pure white background, no shadow”). The flatter the background, the cleaner the edge.
Heavily compressed JPGs make the background speckled — if the edge looks grainy, export the original at higher quality or as PNG.
For a logo or text image, press “Punch all” to open up the letter counters. If background is left behind, drag “Removal strength” to the right; if it eats into the subject, drag it left.
